Moving from North America to the UK
Moving is one of the five most stressful things that you'll do in your lifetime, so anything that you can do to alleviate this stress is important. If you're moving overseas for business, you'll undoubtedly need a moving company, so you might be interested in visiting a web site with tips about moving in North America. International moving is almost invariably more difficult than domestic moving, so be certain to do enough research ahead of time.
And one of the last things that you want to worry about during your move is whether or not the house that you are heading for is going to be clean when you get there. With all of the other problems in pressure that you're going to face prior to the move, it only makes sense to hire a professional cleaning team to ensure that your home-to-be is spotless and sparkling upon your arrival.
But what are some of the other things that you'll need to take care of? Well, let's take a look at a few of the more obvious ones.
First, you'll obviously need two make sure that your passport is current and that it has at least six months remaining in it before it expires. As a good general rule, if your passport has less than a year to go, then it's time to get it replaced. Generally, Canadian passports are issued for a five-year duration, while American passports [which are twice as expensive as Canadian] are valid for a decade. If you don't know where to check this, your passport's expiration date will be on the same page as your photograph.
Second, you'd better remember that the UK is on an entirely different electrical voltage than North America. North American appliances operate at 110 volts on a 60 hertz cycle, whereas the UK has 220 volts on a 50 hertz cycle. While a good transformer will allow you to use most electrical goods, anything with an internal clock will not function correctly due to the difference in cycles. This includes clock radios, record players, and washer/dryers. Also, you'll need to decide which of your appliances simply are not worth buying transformers for; either because they are too big to transport easily or simply not expensive enough. So start dividing your things into two piles-one to stay, and one to go.
Third, no one wants to have to deal with financial matters immediately after a move. So try to set up a bank account in your new city or town ahead of time. Many British banks have branches in North America that you may be able to use for this purpose. But if they don't, you can still do a little research online and set one up that way. If nothing else, this will remove one of the post move tasks that you're going to have to do.
These are just three of the things that you're going to have to think about it before hiring a moving company to move you to the UK. Remember that the sooner you get started planning, the better!.
