Leaving Your Home in a Clean Condition
Wouldn't it be wonderful if every time you moved into a new home or apartment, it was so clean that you wouldn't have to do any work beforehand? Charity, as they say, begins at home. And while you cannot control the actions of the people who previously owned your new home, you can control your own. So let's discuss how to leave your home in the condition that you would like it to be in if you were just moving into it.
Try to pack as many of the things that you own ahead of time. If possible, store all of your moving boxes in one room prior to your move. For most people, the car garage is the most suitable place. Try to make your other rooms as empty as possible so that they will be even easier to clean.
Rather than disposing of all of your extra house paint, gather it together in one spot and leave a letter explaining the location of each colour. This will also give you an easy place to find your paint if you need to touch up any of the walls because of damage during moving day.
Remember to try and fill-in any holes from pictures that you have put up. A quick application of some wall filler should bring everything back to shape. Also, take a quick walk around the outside of your home and inspect it for any damage that might need to be repaired.
Be certain to get back any house keys that you might have lent out to your neighbours. If you have an electric garage door, take the activator out of your car and put it into a basket of things to be left behind for the new person moving in.
You should begin to prepare a small basket with all of the items that you are going to be required to hand over to either the new owner or to your real estate agent. You should also probably sit down and write a short letter informing the new owner about any of the foibles or problem areas of your home that you think they might want to be aware of.
If you own a pet, try to patrol your backyard in the weeks prior to your move so that you can clean up any of your dog's 'little presents'.
If you really want to be remembered as an angel, put together a short list of any good restaurants near your home, or stores that you have found especially useful. Leave it in the basket with the house keys and garage door opener. Again, try to imagine how much you would appreciate if someone were to do this for you. You might want to include the phone number for your paperboy and the local utilities.
So there you have a few of the more obvious ways of leaving your home in a more acceptable condition for its next owners. Any good moving company will be willing to work with you on the day of your move in order to minimize the amount of chaos created on moving day.
