Tips for a Clean Moving Day

Moving day is difficult enough without having to move into a house that's already dirty. That new dream home of yours will never be as easy to clean as it will when it's empty, so let's talk about a few ways that you can minimize your clean up after you've decided to move into a new home.

If possible, establish a relationship with the home seller ahead of your move-in day in order to smooth the transition. Just as you would not leave a mess behind at a friend's house, your seller is probably less likely to do so if you have established a personal relationship with them.

Speak to your seller ahead of time about leaving behind whatever left over paint they have. This can be used to touch up anywhere that gets scuffed during the move-in. And try to minimize those wall rubs and scuffs while moving furniture by draping all of your large furniture pieces in blankets. The blanket will act as a cushion for both the wall and your furniture.

If you have decided that you need to clean the walls, do it before moving day. If you cannot arrange this, then arrive a few hours before your mover in order to allow time to do it. And always remember to wash walls from the bottom to the top. This will help to prevent any dirty drips from soaking into your carpeting.

Arranging to visit your new home before the move in can also allow you to either vacuum or steam clean the carpeting. Again, if your schedule simply doesn't allow this, arrive early enough on moving day so that you will be able to give the rugs a quick going over.

Before they get moved as the time to clean any of those large, expensive objects like pianos which are only rarely cleaned. Before you wrap them up, be sure to give them a thorough going over.

Be sure to purchase construction plastic so that you can put it down in all areas of the house that will be highly trafficked during move-in day. If you have the misfortune of having a rainy moving day, this plastic becomes an absolute necessity.

Another tip is to try and arrange with your mover to have one inside team and one outside team. The outside team will bring objects into your front hall, and the inside team will distribute them throughout your new home. Hopefully this will limit any dirt and water coming in.

Try to arrange to have your children looked after by a babysitter on the day of your move-in. Anyone who already has children will understand why.

Any reputable moving company will work with you to try to ensure that your house remains clean during your moving day. Remember, your new home will never be as easy to clean as it is before there is anything inside of it. So try to clean your home prior to moving in if at all possible.
